Sindhi Cultural Heritage

1)The Story of soulful sufi music, poignant literature, and tremendous culture.

2)The Indus valley civilization might have been the early ancestors of Sindhis as per some recent research studies. The Sindhi culture goes back to the third millennium BC. The 19th and 20th Centuries` archaeological excavations hinted at the at the faith, culture and lifestyle of the people of the Sindh. The agricultural practices, traditional arts and crafts, customs and tradition and other parts of social life go back to a mature Indus Valley Civilization.

3)The citizens of Indus Valley used an ancient and rich language. The Sindhi writers have contributed to poetry and prose to the field of literature. One of the world`s oldest Sindhi Literature has reference to the writings of Arab historians. In the 8th or 9th century Quran was translated in Sindhi. Probably it was the first eastern language in which the Quran was translated. Sindhi poets used to recite their verses before the Muslim Caliphs in Baghdad. During the research, they have also found treatises written in Sindhi on astronomy, medicine, and history during the 8th and 9th centuries.

4)The land of Sindh has been blessed with sages, poets, artists, and musicians from time immortal. The spiritual values of brotherhood and humanism have been the qualities of the noblemen and women of Sindh. The great poets of Sindh, Shah Abdul Latif, SachalSarmast, and Sami, identified themselves with the universal spirit. Compositions of Shah Abdul LatifBhittai and SachalSarmast used to be famous throughout Sindh.

5)Music of Sindh is as vibrant as it`s culture. It`s either performed the “Baits” or the “Waee” styles. The Sanhoon (low voice) or Graham (high voice) is used to deliver the “Baits” style of music. The “Waee” style performance of music is instrumental composition played using a sting instrument. Sindhi music has its unique charm. Sufi music is performed at shrines in many different ways, and other forms of music are performed at studios and gatherings.

6)The limited natural resources of the desert region available in the area and continuous foreign influence has shaped Sindh. The Indus River and the Arabian Sea supported the trades through waterways to far lands. The local subtropical climate reflects the impact of it on Sindh language, folklore, traditions, customs and lifestyle.

7)The research depicts diverse food, trade, beautiful clothing, elaborate houses, transportation, and different types of entertainment. The studies throughout history show a rich and varied culture of Sindhis.

 

WHAT IS THE FAMOUR DRESS OF SINDHI?

Sindhi Women wear the shalwarkameez or the sari and the men wear the shalwarkameez or the kurta with pyjamma. However, before the adoption of the shalwarkameez, the saree and the kurta, Sindhi`s had their traditional costumes. During the medieval period and before the Mughal rules, the costumes worn by the people of Sindh resembled the dresses worn in Iraq and adjoining countries. The dresses included short tunics and Iraqi style long robes.
